Health: The skin after sunbathing

When one person has already started work again, the other is still on a (sun) holiday. But sooner or later everyone will have to deal with the after-sun, and this is not purely referring to the ointment that you apply to the skin after sunbathing. There is more you can do to keep the skin fresh and healthy after sunbathing.

Protection

It cannot be said often enough, but the sun is destructive if you stay in it for a long time without or with limited protection. And everything is longer than half an hour. So whatever you try to repair afterwards, you cannot repair what was previously broken. Where red, warm and swollen skin will recover once, but if this happens more than once you are being destructive to your skin. So start at the beginning and do two things, namely:

  • Always protect yourself well in the sun (apply a little extra every half hour in the sun and preferably seek shade regularly, even then the skin can still get a nice tan).
  • Drink a lot of water during the day (preferably not ice cold and not bubbles), with a lot being 2.5 to 3 liters (normally 2 liters per day is sufficient).

Keeping the skin healthy

Moisture

But even if you protect the skin well, the skin can suffer from deficiencies. Moisture is sun deficiency. You can repair this relatively easily by standing under a lukewarm shower after sunbathing and rubbing shower oil over the skin. Pat your skin dry after showering and use an after-sun milk to make the skin neutral again. The oil prevents the skin from drying out, which the shower ultimately does, and the milk replenishes the skin sufficiently.Another option, but one that not everyone will experience as pleasant, is to rub the skin with yogurt before taking a shower and let it sit on the skin for a while. A moment to cool down from the sun and then a layer of yogurt also softens and cools the skin.

Spotty

Not all skin is the same and some people develop spots on their skin quite quickly after sunbathing. It goes without saying that if you stain easily, it is extra important that you apply good cream beforehand. However, afterwards you can also do something for your skin and there are special products for that that keep the damage (because that is what it is) within limits. These are products that contain special vitamins, peptides and antioxidants. For example, the after-sun from Clarins or that from La Prairie.

Burning feeling

Skin that has been in the sun for a long time may feel burning and slightly tight. Before taking a shower, it may also be useful to let the skin rest for a while (in a cooler room) and place thin slices of cucumber on it. It takes the heat out of the skin and makes the skin feel less painful.

Inflammation

Sometimes inflammation can even be the result of a strong afternoon in the sun. In addition to soothing the pain, paracetamol can have a positive effect on the inflammatory response.

Finally

There are plenty of simple ways to ensure that your skin remains beautiful and well-groomed and nothing is as good as staying out of the sun. However, the sun feels very pleasant and is good for your mood. If you protect yourself well and take good care of it afterwards, you can also maintain that beautiful skin. There are no guarantees in life, but if you are good to your skin, you do more for your body than just keep the outside nice.
