Save money on cosmetics and more about shelf life

Have you ever come home with the ‘wrong’ shade of lipstick or make-up? There is something to be done about it. You can read more about this in this article, but also about the shelf life of different make-up, such as lipstick, eye shadow, etc…

A bad buy

We’ve all had a bad purchase when it comes to lipstick. A color that looks beautiful in the store with neon lighting can sometimes be a bit disappointing at home. A color that is too dark, too light, or too bright. A lipstick can be quite expensive, so it is a shame to throw it away. Do you have several bad purchases at home? Then take a good look at these copies. Are there colors that match? Keep this aside and make it a new color

Melting down multiple lipsticks

  • Take a small empty jar that is heat resistant.
  • Place a pan with a little water on the stove. Do not let the water boil, but make sure it is hot enough.
  • Place a heatproof bowl in the pan with the water.
  • Cut off the lipstick and place it in the bowl until it melts.
  • Take another color lipstick that you want to mix with it and place it in the bowl as well. Wait until the colors have melted and stir them well with a spatula or stick.
  • Remove the glass dish from the pan with an oven mitt to prevent burns. Immediately pour the mixture into the jar before it starts to solidify.
  • When the substance has hardened, the new lip color can be applied to the lips with a brush.

Create new shades of eye shadow

With cream eyeshadow sticks, the same procedure can be followed to create a new eyeshadow color. Even with two shades of camouflage markers, a new color can be created that is tailored to the skin color.

Foundations

A foundation that is too light and a foundation that is too dark can be mixed together to create a unique color that suits the complexion. A good way to test whether the foundation suits your own skin color is to hold it near the neck or the inside of the wrist. The color should never deviate too much from your own skin color. When in doubt, choose a color that is one shade too light rather than a foundation that is too dark.

How long does makeup last?

  • An opened mascara remains good for 3 months. Do not try to ‘pump’ with the mascara roller in the holder, otherwise air will get into the mascara and that is not good for its durability. You have to be especially careful with eye make-up because eye infections can quickly develop.
  • Lipstick and lip gloss last for about 6 months. Unopened they will last for about 3 years. Store lipsticks in the refrigerator, especially during the warm summer months, to prevent them from melting and to extend their shelf life.
  • Nail polish can also be stored in the refrigerator and will remain good for about 1 year.
  • You can store powder, blusher and powder eyeshadow for approximately 2 years. Rouge or eye shadow that is greasy, such as cream, lasts for about a year and a half.
  • Foundations last about a year to a year and a half, depending on the composition.
  • It is important to use a spatula when using facial creams and foundation from a jar. If this is not done, bacteria can be transferred to the cream or foundation. It is also important to close the jars or tubes immediately, so that bacteria have less chance. This is not only important for maintaining the quality of the cosmetics and/or care products, but the shelf life can also be positively influenced to some extent.
