Vitamin B4

After meat, eggs are the second important source of choline, a substance found in our brains. Eggs are good for the brain. It prevents the age-related condition of forgetfulness. That’s because choline also works as an anti-inflammatory. Chronic inflammation at the cellular level can lead to cancer, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, Alzheimer’s, osteoporosis and type 2 diabetes. Choline is also called vitamin B4, it is a new member of the vitamin B complex since 1998. An egg contains more than 26% of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of vitamin B4. Choline is a vitamin that our body also produces itself. But the total production is often not enough and there is no harm in eating eggs containing choline. Choline is an important part of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that ensures communication between nerve cells and muscles.

Nutrients in the egg

Eggs contain some important vitamins and minerals, apart from the fact that they obviously contain protein. Eggs contain a lot of selenium and iodine. An egg provides approximately 20% of the RDI for these minerals. Molybdenum and phosphorus account for 11 and 9% of the RDA respectively. In addition to B4, eggs also contain B2, B5, B12 and vitamin D. Eggs also contain a lot of the amino acid tryptophan.

B12 in egg

Eggs contain vitamin B12. Some experts still perpetuate the myth that B12 is only found in meat. An egg contains 9% of the RDA of B12. This vitamin is also found in yeast and only a few plant species, including the little-eaten herb comfrey, which is more often used against muscle pain and injuries. B12 is also found in seaweed such as kelp. Vegans who do not eat animal products such as milk and eggs should therefore eat brewer’s yeast or one of the other vegetables mentioned.

Egg is good for cholesterol

For a long time, industries feared that eggs were bad for cholesterol. Such studies were sponsored by the Unilevers and Bayers of this world, who have an interest in making people afraid of cholesterol because then medicines and foods with cholesterol-lowering claims are sold better. However, it has never been scientifically proven that eating eggs leads to cholesterol levels and it has never been shown that high cholesterol levels are bad for the blood or heart. That cholesterol is bad is a modern myth. The scientific truth is that eggs maintain cholesterol levels. However, after eating eggs there is a shift to slightly less LDL cholesterol, which is said to be wrong, to more HDL cholesterol, which scientists currently think is good cholesterol. These predicates ‘good’ and ‘bad’ are very relative since both types of cholesterol are very important substances in the body. According to today’s scientific criteria, eating eggs is actually good for cholesterol.

What does the chicken eat?

There has been some concern lately about the declining health benefits of eggs due to chickens being fed genetically engineered corn. This causes all kinds of other substances to end up in the chicken and ultimately in eggs. People who eat eggs in turn ingest these substances. It is not entirely clear about these substances because of their long-term health effects. Actually, that is reason enough to be careful about eating too many non-organic free-range eggs.
