Infectious diseases in children – Thrush

The fungus that causes Thrush is very common, but it usually does not get the chance to grow. Fortunately, because thrush is a very annoying infectious disease, especially for smaller children.

Thrush

Thrush is caused by a fungus. It is therefore a fungal infection in the mouth. Only if a child has less resistance or a lack of competition from other (non-pathogenic) bacteria does the fungus have a chance to grow and cause complaints.

Phenomena

The only symptom of thrush are white spots in the mouth, which cannot be brushed away.

Contamination and consequences

A baby is usually infected by the mother and then infects the mother again if the baby is breastfed. That’s how it goes back and forth

Exclusion from daycare, playgroup or school

With some infectious diseases, a child is not welcome at a daycare center, playgroup or school for a while because of the high risk of infection. The GGD (Municipal Health Care) has drawn up rules for this. A child with Thrush does not need to be excluded.

Report to the GGD

For some infectious diseases, a treating physician is obliged to report to the GGD that a child has this infectious disease. Reporting to the GGD is not necessary in case of thrush.
