Soft and easy bowel movements

Drink, fiber and exercise

A hard bowel movement makes the problems worse and that is why you should aim for soft and easy bowel movements. This can be achieved by drinking a lot, eating fiber-rich food and by exercising intensively for at least half an hour every day in the garden or in the household or by running.

High fiber foods

Fiber-rich food is necessary for good bowel movements. Dietary fibers are indigestible substances found in plant products. These work in the large intestine and are essential for good bowel movements. There are soluble and insoluble fibers, each with a different effect. You must drink enough with a fiber-rich diet. Fiber retains moisture in the stool and if you drink too little, the constipation will actually get worse.

Eating regularly and using the toilet properly

Regularity in your diet is also important for good intestinal function. This means that you eat at least three main meals a day and do not skip breakfast. To prevent problems, it is also advisable to go to the toilet when you feel that you need to have a bowel movement.Hemorrhoids / Source: WikipedianProlific, Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-SA-3.0)

Good and gentle toilet hygiene

Advice regarding good toilet hygiene consists of washing with cold water without soap and avoiding rough toilet paper or perfumed or alcohol-containing wet tissues. Use white toilet paper and moisten it slightly with tap water before use. Installing a toilet shower in the toilet is even better. Furthermore, it is advisable to listen to the defecation reflex and not to delay bowel movements. Finally, avoiding straining makes sense to treat and prevent hemorrhoids.

Take a sitz bath

A sitz bath, where you sit with your knees drawn up in approximately 10 centimeters of warm water, provides better venous drainage. Not only does the area around the anus receive better blood flow, causing the swollen veins to shrink, but the warm water also soothes the (pain) complaints.

Cool with ice

By cooling with ice for one to three minutes, the hemorrhoids recede. This will reduce swelling, itching and pain.

Donut cushion for hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids occur as a result of high pressure around the anus. This pressure can be relieved by using a seat cushion with an opening in the middle, a so-called ‘donut cushion’, also called a ‘hemorrhoid cushion’ or ‘seat ring’.Witch hazel / Source: Donar Reiskoffer, Wikimedia Commons (GFDL)

Witch hazel

You can dab a cotton pad with a witch hazel solution twice a day. Especially if the hemorrhoids are bleeding, this is an effective method to stop the bleeding. The witch hazel (Hamamelis ×intermedia) is a slow-growing shrub from the Hamamelidaceae family. As a natural product, witch hazel extract contains more than 160 different substances. Particularly noteworthy are the tannins, flavonoids and proanthocyanidins. These have, for example, the following effect:

  • hemostatic (blood-clotting)
  • astringent (astringent)
  • anti-inflammatory
  • antibacterial and antiviral
  • antioxidant
  • cell-protective

Because of these effects, witch hazel can provide relief from the symptoms you experience with hemorrhoids. The tannins in witch hazel are especially helpful. When applied to the skin or mucous membranes, they react with the body’s own proteins, causing them to change their structure. They cause the upper layers of the skin or mucous membranes to contract. The skin becomes impenetrable and has a kind of protective layer. In addition, flavonoids suppress the formation of free oxygen radicals that attack your cells. The proanthocyanidins (a type of bioflavonoids) in witch hazel are also effective fighters against free radicals. These substances are active against bacteria and viruses and support cell growth.

Use hemorrhoid ointment

Applying Lidocaine Vaseline cream locally can soothe complaints such as pain and burning. Lidocaine numbs the skin, so you no longer feel the itching. The ointment works within a few minutes.

Wear cotton underwear

Cotton underwear is softer and causes less damage to the skin.
