The female condom

Not only men have the option of wearing a condom during sex. Since 1992, a woman has also had the choice of using a condom, the female condom.

General

A female condom prevents an unwanted pregnancy and protects against STDs, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, such as AIDS, Hepatitis Syphilis or Gonorrhea. The female condom offers a certain degree of autonomy for the woman. The woman is not dependent on the man whether he uses a condom, but can make her own decision about use and protection. The stable, soft cover is made of transparent polyurethane. Before sexual intercourse, the condom is inserted into the vagina and forms a barrier between the vagina, the cervix, the labia and the penis. Since the female condom is effective for up to 8 hours after insertion and is not felt at all when worn, great flexibility and spontaneity are possible.

The use

The female condom is 17 centimeters long and has a flexible ring at the top and bottom. The inner ring at the closed end is used to insert the condom into the vagina with your finger. It automatically slides into the right place behind the pubic bone and thus holds the condom in the vagina. The outer, soft ring at the open end remains outside the vagina during sexual intercourse and covers the area around the vulva. The condom is oiled with a non-spermicidal, silicone-based lubricant . This makes insertion and sexual intercourse easier. Both oil-containing and water-containing or spermicidal lubricants can be used.To remove the condom, squeeze the outer ring, twist the condom together and gently pull it out of the vagina. The female condom does not necessarily have to be removed immediately after sexual intercourse.

Security and benefits

The outer ring of the condom covers both the labia and the lower shaft of the penis. This provides better protection against diseases. The female condom can be inserted up to 10 hours before sexual intercourse and is not dependent on the male erection, which ensures greater sexual spontaneity. Like a second skin, it lies close to the vaginal wall and does not hinder the man.Because the female condom, unlike the male condom, which consists of latex, consists of polyurethane, it does not cause allergic reactions. In addition, no other side effects or risks are known to date. Polyurethane is more stable than latex, odorless and can be used with oil- or water-based lubricants. It can conduct heat, so that sexual intercourse feels very real and natural, despite the condom. Unlike latex, polyurethane does not react to high temperatures and humidity, so it should not be stored in special places.

NB

The female condom should not be used at the same time as a male condom. The friction between polyurethane and latex can lead to cracks and the protection is lost.If you or your partner have had an unwanted pregnancy, read here how an abortion pill works.
