My child is exhibiting strange behavior, is something wrong?

Having a child is fun, because you recognize yourself in it as a parent! Things may happen in the child’s life that cause him or her to behave in a completely or counterproductive manner. Think of aggressive behavior towards yourself, parents or others, withdrawal, pent-up anger or shame. Why does your child react differently than normal and what can you do if your child behaves strangely?

Shame on the parents

Not every family is the same and so the bonds can develop differently. The family can understand each other well until they argue on the street every day. In addition, behavioral abnormalities may arise in the child related to that bond, but also due to changes within the family, such as:

Shame about not having enough money

The finances are not in order, which means the family has to make significant cuts in many aspects. A sale of the home is also within the possibilities, which makes the child feel ashamed of that circumstance compared to other children. The options are fewer, causing the child to fall outside the circle of friends.

Sick parent or death

A common phenomenon is that the child is ashamed of the parent if there is an illness in which the parent has difficulty walking. This certainly applies if the child is out and about with that parent. In addition, it may be that someone dies, causing the child to withdraw into himself.

Being bullied

Children go to school and therefore meet other children. Groups are often formed within which the child feels most comfortable. However, sometimes a child is left out due to circumstances and is continuously bullied by the others. The feeling that the child does not belong increases sharply, causing the child to isolate himself more and more. You notice this as a parent because the child becomes quiet or can occasionally become aggressive.

Growing up faster

A strong indication that something special must be going on, as if it seems that the child no longer looks childish. This is also called accelerated growing up. This is often recognizable in children who develop an illness at a young age that requires long-term hospital treatment. The child reacts more businesslike and is less playful because he has become aware of his own transience. This can also happen if something happens or has happened to the child without the parent knowing.

To conceal something

A quiet child possibly with frightened eyes may have happened to something that should not be told to others. It is possible that the child has been banned from silence by a group of children, a parent or other persons. The child withdraws completely into itself, causing it to become alienated from the environment or parents and the child to exhibit strange behavior. In addition, there will be a short fuse, which makes the child quickly aggressive or angry.

Abuse

It may happen that one of the parents has a condition that causes the child to be abused. Consider, for example, Münchhausen by proxy syndrome, in which the mother abuses the child in order to gain attention. In addition, the child may be deliberately hit by a parent, causing bruises or bruising. The child may not tell the other parent about the behavior of one parent. It is therefore important that you as a parent remain attentive if strange bruises appear on the skin.

Strange child behavior during abuse

The most serious situation is undoubtedly when the child is abused by an older person. The child comes into contact with many people and without us realizing it, something can happen. Wherever the child goes, contact can arise that is not good. Symptoms may include that the child does not want to sleep or sleeps poorly or cries excessively at night. It may also be characteristic that the child no longer has those radiant, playful children’s eyes, but observant eyes. If your child behaves in a manner that is not childish, then something must be wrong. If in doubt, you should always have the child examined so that action can be taken quickly.

Talk to your child

In all previous cases it is necessary for the parent to talk to the child. People often respond incorrectly or incorrectly to a child if the child remains misunderstood. Ask questions in a non-coercive way to get the story out. If the child does not want to talk, give the child time. However, indicate that the child can always contact you with questions, comments and problems. On the other hand, an acquaintance of the child can also act as a contact because the child may be able to talk better with that acquaintance or grandfather and grandmother. Also talk to your child if you notice strange behavior. If there is any reason to seek professional help or guidance, please do not hesitate. There must be an opportunity for the child to have plenty of space to show and process emotions. The problems and causes of the changed behavior must be addressed immediately.
