Why did we have a lot of hair?

At the time when we were just above the evolutionary ladder of the apes, we had heavy hair growth all over the body, precisely to keep the body pleasantly warm. From the moment we started standing upright and had the opportunity to protect ourselves from the weather with a skin, the need for a lot of hair decreased. During evolution, the body reduced the amount of testosterone so that hair was less accentuated.Normal hair concentration in women occurs:

  • on the scalp;
  • around the pubic area;
  • and under the armpits.

This is the same for men and women, although men can also have additional hair on the face, stomach, chest and limbs. However, in both men and women, the amount of hair on certain parts of the body can be more or less intensive. This is caused by the hormone testosterone.

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a standard sex hormone found in every human that mainly produces male characteristics. Consider the formation of the beard, a deeper voice and more hair. In addition, it forms the basis for the production of sperm cells in men. Testosterone also occurs to a lesser extent in the woman’s body, while estrogen ensures the woman’s shape. It shapes the breasts and further growth of feminine features.

Hair growth

This is the condition in women where the pituitary gland releases an increasing amount of luteinizing hormone into the body. Normally, this hormone ensures that eggs can ripen and jump at the right time. If the amount in the blood increases, androgen increases, which is used to produce testosterone. This encourages the body to grow more hair. Consider thin facial hair, for example above the lip, but also hair on the stomach, back and limbs. In addition, a number of other related symptoms may occur, such as:

  • reduced fertility or infrequent or irregular menstruation;
  • decrease in the amount of hair on the head, but an increase where you would not expect it;
  • oily skin, caked dandruff and pimples;
  • discolored skin and possibly high blood pressure.

Tips for unusual hair growth

Often the complaints concern not being able to get pregnant and hair growth where people would rather not see it. There are good treatment methods for those two symptoms. On the one hand, the right pill must be chosen precisely to prevent the hormone androgen. This allows the hormones to recover to a more normal level. On the other hand, testosterone levels must be counteracted. This can be done using the anti-androgen flutamide as found in Drogenil and Eulexin. Always let your GP explain which medicine is most suitable for your circumstances. It is also important to eat healthy, lose weight and exercise more.
