Greasy scalp scabs, what can you do about them?

We all suffer from dandruff sometimes, but it is a different story when there are greasy scalp scabs. Your scalp itches, you feel insecure and uncomfortable. In addition, it can fester, bleed and be painful. What causes greasy scalp scabs and which treatment method can you use yourself?

How does it look?

The scalp scab feels as if something is pressing on the scalp, possibly causing itching. This also means that people tend to scratch the area, with all the associated consequences. It feels like a caked layer on top of normal skin. It is greasy and sticky, causing it to stick stubbornly to the scalp. You can scrape it off the head with your nail, but that can cause a blood-related inflammation to develop under the scab. Conditions will then become increasingly worse. The scab can be white to yellow and looks like a layer or thickening on the skin. Because it also firmly holds the hair on the head, local baldness can occur.

Dandruff and caking

Dandruff is caused by dead skin cells, which accumulate on the skin and stick to the scalp. Part of this is that the skin produces sebum, which increases stickiness. Dandruff remains in the hair because insufficient cleaning is done. An anti-dandruff shampoo often offers a solution and you can get rid of it. But that doesn’t apply to everyone. There may also be a rapid increase in dandruff and dirt, which sticks to the scalp like a cake. If left untreated, it can cause inflammation and loss of scalp hair, partly due to bacteria. What can you do about it?

How do greasy scalp scabs form?

The head cake has a number of causes, which together can mean rapid growth. The main cause is moisture. Moisture allows bacteria to thrive under the scab, causing the affected area to continue to grow. There is a chance that it will become a serious infection (if there is already a serious infection with possible pus, seek medical treatment). The main cause is therefore moisture. You often see it: people are in a hurry and shower quickly, so that they walk around with a wet head for a long time. Therein lies the danger that undesirables can spread and grow. What treatment method is there?

How can you treat it?

Firstly, you should not scratch the main crust to loosen pieces, as this could cause a wound. Conditions under the main crust can deteriorate quickly. Because bacteria are an important cause, it is necessary to:

  1. clean the scalp regularly and;
  2. to prevent favorable conditions for further growth of bacteria.

This specifically means the following for the treatment of the hair:

  • wash your hair neatly every day with a good hair detergent. Of course, rinse it well after washing;
  • dry the hair with a cloth and with the fan. Bacteria grow in damp conditions, and caked dandruff also swells due to moisture. Run your fingers through the hair in front of the fan until the scalp and hair are dry;
  • Apply an anti-bacterial ointment or anti-fungal ointment to the deposits. If you can’t see it clearly yourself, have your partner do it. Apply the ointment to the condition in the morning and evening, washing your hair only in the morning;
  • comb your hair neatly.

You should do this for a week so that the deposits dry out, become smaller and then disappear with a shower. It is therefore important that you dry everything thoroughly after showering, so that bacteria no longer have a chance and the crust dries out. If the previous methodhas not shown any improvement within two weeks, then there may be an already heavily infected scalp and scab. In that case it is important to get medical advice.
