Coconut, a fruit with medicinal properties

A coconut is a fruit that is used for many purposes. He is super healthy. In the tropics, coconut palms grow everywhere on the beach. He likes to stand in the sand next to salt water. The tree uses its roots to search for fresh water. A fallen coconut sometimes begins a long journey via the sea. A coconut has a thick, hairy shell with a rock-hard shell on the inside that prevents seawater from penetrating. Fresh coconut

People in the tropics can make many products from the coconut palm. The leaves, veins, and wood are all made into different things. The coconut, in turn, is a versatile product. When you open a coconut you can first drink the water. Coconut water is very healthy and quenches thirst well. This is sterile water, which means completely free of bacteria. It is not without reason that the Polynesians from the Pacific Ocean call the coconut palm the tree of life. Many products can be made from this tree and also many medicines. Almost every disease was cured with a medicine based on the coconut. Like many fruits and vegetables, coconut is one of the foods with medical properties. In addition, they use coconut in traditional meals almost every day.Opened coconut / Source: Nicolai Schäfer, Wikimedia Commons (CC BY-2.5)

Coconut meat

After drinking the coconut, you can eat the coconut meat. If it is fresh, you can use it in soups and sauces. It is also used to make coconut oil. This is an excellent cooking oil, but has sometimes been used as fuel for cars in emergencies, such as on the island of Bougainville. Coconut oil is also used in all kinds of cosmetic products such as soaps, shampoos and body care oils.

Dried coconut

You can also let coconut dry so that it hardens. It is then grated. Grated coconut is delicious on a dessert. Coconut fat is also made. This is a hardened coconut fat that is used to make curries with coconut. Other sauces can also be made from it. For example, fish in coconut sauce is prepared in the coastal areas of tropical regions.

Fresh, green coconut

In the Netherlands you don’t see fresh coconut very often. You are more likely to see the coconut with the brown, hairy shell, but you are less likely to see a fresh coconut with the green outside around it. There are also varieties with a yellow exterior. You can open the hairy coconut by opening one of the three holes on the top of each coconut. The woody skin is rock hard, but the holes are easy to open with a sturdy knife or screwdriver. This is the same place where a coconut crab gets this big hard nut open.

Coconut eating tips

Grated coconut is delicious with rice. When the rice is almost done, you can add grated coconut to it for a tasty coconut rice. It is tasty, nutritious and filling in the morning to put grated coconut in a homemade muesli. If you like to bake cookies, coconut is a good idea to add. Coconut is also widely used in the unbaked pastries of raw food dietitians. These are super delicious pastries without a single grain of sugar.
