The basis of muesli

The basics of muesli are quite simple. Wheat flakes, oat flakes, barley flakes are the most commonly used grains. Raisins and hazelnuts can be added to this and you obtain a muesli. You can also use rye flakes for a homemade granola mix. When you make your own muesli, you undoubtedly use more than 5 ingredients. There are countless options for variation. When you make a muesli with about 10 ingredients and you want to add more, it is also a consideration to make two types of muesli.

Keep it simple

A general tip for making a rich muesli is to add just a little bit of everything. Two tablespoons of raisins are enough for one kilo of muesli. This also applies to other additions. This way the grain base remains intact. If you add too many things to it, the grain content will become relatively low and you will become hungry more quickly during the morning.

Nuts in the morning muesli

Nuts in muesli complete the muesli. It will make you feel full and you will get healthy fats. Always make sure you crumble the nuts until they are slightly larger than the wheat flakes so that they are completely incorporated into the muesli. Depending on your own taste, you can add walnuts, pecan nuts, hazelnuts, almonds or cashew nuts to the muesli. You can of course choose to use a mix of these nuts. Do not use salted nuts. This especially applies to the cashew nut. You can buy unsalted cashew nuts in various stores that are not intended as a drink snack. You can add unsalted peanuts to the muesli in the same way.

Seeds in muesli

In addition to nuts, it is also nice to add a few seeds to the muesli. Sunflower seeds, sesame seeds and linseed go well in a muesli. Just like nuts, the seeds give the muesli a little more body.

Dried fruit

Raisins are dried grapes. Dried fruit is a natural sweetener. Instead of dried grapes, you can also add dried plums, apricots and apples. Buy Tuttifrutti and you immediately have an assortment of dried fruits. You can buy dried cranberries at many supermarkets. Dried goji berries are also a nice addition.

Fresh fruit

Fresh fruit is a great combination with muesli. A mandarin orange or banana can be quickly peeled and cut into pieces. You can also mix other healthy fruits such as apple, pear, blackberries and peaches in a muesli. Of course, you only add fresh fruit on the day you make muesli.

Milk, water or orange juice

There are different ways to make muesli. You can soak muesli first. That takes a few hours. If you like breakfast with soaked muesli and yogurt, it is best to soak the muesli before going to sleep and add the yogurt in the morning. Some people actually like unsoaked muesli.

Cinnamon, cocoa and nutmeg

Muesli with water or milk can be enriched with cinnamon, cocoa and nutmeg. You will then get a slightly sweet taste, mainly due to the cinnamon. It is less tasty to combine cocoa and cinnamon with mandarin, although flavors of course differ. You can always try it, maybe you really like it.
