Paronychia

The condition paronychia involves inflammation of the nail bed. It occurs most often in people who have to wash their hands a lot for work or just because. If it is a persistent infection, a blister with pus in it may develop. If you press this you can sometimes squeeze out pus. If the nail bed is damaged by a bacteria, the cuticle will no longer be protected, causing the nail to become deformed and discolored. Sometimes the nail even becomes white and powdery due to the fungus/bacterium.

Acute paronychia and chronic paronychia

Acute paronychia: This form of paronychia is usually caused by an accident with nail scissors or biting/picking nails or skins around the nail.Chronic paronychia: This form of paronychia usually occurs in people who have suffered from broken or damaged cuticles for a long time. This is because these people wash their hands a lot or use cleaning products with their bare hands.

Symptoms

  • Red and thick cuticle
  • Etterblaer
  • Do not pull on skins
  • Do not bite your nails because you can pull your skin

How to prevent?

You can prevent paronychia when you work with water, such as in the household, by wearing gloves with powder in them. These are the special household gloves.

Therapy

Your doctor could give you antibiotics to help the infection heal. If a blister with pus has already developed, the doctor can puncture it so that the pus can drain. This reduces the pressure on the nail bed, which also reduces pain. If you have a chronic infection, your doctor may prescribe a cream to apply after washing your hands. If you use the cream for a long time and properly, your nail can be restored in a few months.

NB

  • Use nail clippers with care
  • Don’t pick at the skin next to your nail
  • Use household gloves when using cleaning products
  • When children suck their thumbs, this also poses a high risk of paronychia
